Producer
The Pichler family have been based in the village of Wösendorf since 1731, and bought their original cellar in 1884, finally planting their first vines twenty years after that. Today, the meticulous Rudolf Pichler IV, known as Rudi, cultivates fifteen hectares of vineyard including some of the acknowledged ‘grands crus’ of the Wachau.
Vineyard
The Federspiel is a blend from several Wachau vineyards, including valley sites, hillsides and steep high terraces, with gniess, primary rock and loess soils. Yields are kept low between 30 and 35 hectolitres per hectare with botrytis carefully removed by hand.
Winery
After a cold soak lasting twelve hours, the juice was fermented at 18- 22ºC in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation was avoided and the wine was aged in tank for seven months before bottling.
