The magnificent Haras de Pirque estate occupies a privileged position at the foot of the Andes, in Chile’s Maipo Valley region. The lovingly tended vineyards are on largely north-facing slopes, from the middle of which rises a unique horseshoe-shaped gravity-flow winery, inspired by the estate’s other claim to fame: as an internationally renowned thoroughbred breeding farm. The wine side of Haras de Pirque is now owned by Italy’s Antinori family, their chief winemaker Renzo Cotarella bringing his own elegant sensibility to bear while respecting the character of this very particular terroir.
Vineyard
The grapes come entirely from the organically managed estate vineyards surrounding the winery, where vine varieties are matched to each individual plot to maximize the quality of the raw material. They were picked by hand at the end of April.
Winery
The various parcels were fermented individually with regular pump-overs. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine was pressed and transferred to one-year-old French oak barrels for malolactic and twelve months’maturation. It was then bottled without fining or filtration.
