Producer
Balthasar Ress was founded in 1870 by a hotelier of that name, who wanted to make wine to serve his guests. Now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the family, the company still produces wine under Balthasar’s original brand name:’Von Unserm’, literally ‘from us’, a dry, multi-vineyard blend that represents the house style. From their base in Hattenheim, in the epicentre of the Rheingau, Ress also controls many superb vineyards that are bottled as single-site wines.
Vineyard
Ress owns thirty hectares of Rheingau vineyard, almost entirely planted to Riesling. The fruit for the Von Unserm is sourced from the estate’s most important Rheingau sites and carefully blended to achieve a harmonious result. The grapes were picked by hand.
Winery
The grapes were emptied straight into the wine press, with no crushing or pumping. After the must settled, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. The wine was bottled early to maximize freshness and varietal aroma. No oak, malolactic fermentation or battonage were used.
