Now, let’s meet Harry!
Why did you decide to go vegan?
I’ve been a vegetarian for eons, and have always been a passionate advocate for animal welfare and environmental sustainability. I found myself becoming increasingly educated on the treatment of animals in the dairy industry and realised that eating dairy didn’t align with my personal ethics – so I have been dairy-free since.
What led you to starting your page?
I started my page in May 2020, but long before then, pictures of jacket potatoes and beans on toast were showing up on many a family & friends’ Whatsapp chat. So, to reduce the risk of losing all those close to me, I created @HarryTurnsVegan. It has led me to engage with so many wonderful people from such diverse backgrounds and geographies. I’ve learnt an enormous amount about veganism, food, nutrition, climate change, sustainability, politics and a catalogue of other subjects. It’s been a great journey so far.
What is your favourite type of cuisine?
It has to be Italian. Tomato-based sauces, garlic, onions, basil, oregano, and olive oil – all simply mouthwatering. I find the combination of flavours utterly irresistible, and the entire cuisine is so easy to adapt to a vegan diet. Also, pizza – enough said!

A vegan food/substitute that you just cannot get behind?
This is a hard one. I guess vegan cheese still has a way to go. There are some decent ones out there, but nothing I adore. I am also vehemently against using mushrooms as a vegan substitute in ANY situation (I realise I’m in the minority here).
Who or what sparked your interest in cooking?
I’d have to shout-out to the best cook in the world: my Mum. I crave her food every single day. I grew up with the smell of food floating through the house so it was never far from my mind. But now that I am a grown-up and have my own kitchen, it’s given me the time and space to get creative.
I’m not a massive recipe follower but I have a good idea of the flavours I like, so I think cooking comes somewhat naturally. A special mention to the Pizza Hut chef who invented their cookie dough. It was my all-time favorite dessert and it’s inspired me to create a vegan alternative – and so far, I’m not a million miles away.
Name your top 3 ingredients that you cannot live without.
Onions, garlic and tomatoes – I have a mild panic attack when stocks run low.
Favourite place for Vegan food in London?
Difficult one as there are so many great places. For burgers – Halo Burger really hits the spot. Purezza for the perfect pizza. Nem Nem for some lush Vietnamese food. The Gate in St John’s Wood is ace, too.
Favourite recipe on your page to date?
My buffalo cauliflower wings are amazing – check them out!
Any tips for those wanting to start their own food blog?
It might be a massive cliché but it’s important to have fun and enjoy it. Cook what you like to eat, talk about the things that matter to you,, and always let your personality shine through.
Which one of our recipe boxes would you most like to try and why?
I would most like to try the Asian Red Vegetable Curry. I am an absolute fool for Thai food and it looks and sounds delicious.
