Producer
With twenty-eight hectares under vine, fifth-growth Pédesclaux is one of the smaller Pauillac châteaux, but occupies a favourable gravel plateau close to Pontet-Canet and Mouton-Rothschild. It was established in 1810 by a Bordeaux broker of the same name, and passed through the hands of two other families before being bought by Françoise and Jacky Lorenzetti in 2009. Through acquisiton they have increased the vineyard holdings from thirty-five to forty-eight hectares and coupled with the construction of a new gravity-fed winery, it is clear that Pédesclaux is one to watch.
Vineyard
The soil is gravel over calcareous and silicious clay, with vines averaging thirty-five years old. The grapes were harvested by hand into small crates.
Winery
Following manual sorting, first by cluster and then by berry, and a period of cold-maceration, traditional vinification in stainless steel vats lasted roughly three weeks. The wine then spent sixteen months ageing in French oak barrels, ten percent of which were new.
