Producer
Bodegas Valdemar is a family company whose roots date back to 1889, and whose Riojas have long been a reference point for the DO. Despite this their approach is very much forward-looking; having pioneered many techniques in the region, from barrel fermentation and temperature control to saignée-method rosado, their style tends towards the modern.
Vineyard
Unusually for Rioja, all the Valdemar grapes come from the family’s own vineyards (almost 300 hectares), giving unrivalled control over the quality of the fruit at every level. The grapes for this wine came exclusively from the Alto Cantabria vineyard, planted in 1974 on limestone and sandy loam soils. Harvest took place during the first week of October.
Winery
The must underwent low temperature skin contact for eight hours at 14ºC, followed by fermentation and seven months’ ageing in French oak barrels.
