Producer
Having honed his winemaking skills around the globe, Quinta da Cassa’s winemaker Rui Madeira has returned to the land of his birth to work with the indigenous varieties and spectacular vineyards of the Douro. The estate is found in the upper Douro, on the river ́s left bank, amongst the grade-a vineyards where the best vintage ports are made. Here the combination of old vines and high altitudes give his wines the balance, poise and sense of place that is so often lacking in the region.
Vineyard
The grapes come from the estate vineyards, planted on schist soils on the left bank of the Douro river. These vertically planted vineyards sit at altitudes of between 125 and 250 metres above sea level.
Winery
After hand picking, destemming and gentle crushing the grapes underwent cold maceration for forty eight hours. Alcoholic fermentation took place over fifteen days followed by malolactic fermentation lasting another fifteen days. Following this, the wine was aged for a further twelve months in second and third-fill American oak barrels.
