A vegetarian hamper that is not an afterthought
Most vegetarian hampers are the meat hamper with the meat taken out and nothing put back. This one is built the other way round: it starts from the best vegetable and store cupboard food we import, and the things that are missing were never going to be in it. There is no cheese either, so it suits anyone avoiding animal rennet as well as anyone who simply does not eat meat.
Who makes it
Conservas Virto have been preserving vegetables in Navarra since 1927, in glass rather than tin, from the Ebro valley – their white asparagus and piquillo peppers carry the Denominacion de Origen for the region. Charles Antona have made jam, chutney and pate in Corsica since 1962, from fruit and vegetables grown on the island, under the PDO mark. La Cerqua Tartufi hunt their own truffle in Umbria and turn it into oil, salt, honey and butter within days of it coming out of the ground. Around those three sit Acetaia Castelli’s balsamic from Modena, Ibendra’s almonds and quince paste from Spain, Donna Itriya’s organic bronze-die pasta from Puglia and cold-pressed oil from Sardinia and Andalusia. We import all of it ourselves rather than buying through a wholesaler, which is the only reason a hamper at this price can hold food at this level. How we check it
Every line in this hamper is recorded as vegetarian or vegan on our own product database, and we build the box from that list rather than by eye. Anything we have not confirmed with the producer stays out, even where it would probably be fine – which is why one or two obvious items are absent. If you need the full ingredient list for anything in the box, ask and we will send it.
Packing and delivery
We pack this by hand in Worcestershire in a matte-black gift box with a printed ivory-cream sleeve, on the day it leaves us. We deliver across mainland UK and can send it straight to the recipient with a handwritten card and no prices anywhere in the parcel. How to serve it
Most of this is a table rather than a meal: the peppers, asparagus, olives and pickles go straight onto a board with the crackers and want nothing done to them. The oils and the balsamic are for finishing rather than cooking – over the vegetables, over pasta, over anything that needs waking up. If there is truffle in the box, use it cold and use it last: warm it and you lose most of what you paid for.
