Made in an elegant and modern style, this Pinotage shows vibrant notes of cherries and raspberries, with a hint of cedar and vanilla from the oak ageing. The palate has rich red fruit and the savouriness typical of the variety.

Producer

Lievland is one of Stellenbosch’s most historically important farms, and the property in its current form dates back to 1934, when it was purchased by Baron and Baroness Von Stiernhjelm from Latvia. In late 2017, José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, two of the South African wine industry’s leading lights, purchased the estate and they have since set about an extensive re-planting program and re-constructing the cellars. The farm is located in a favourable position on the north-western slope of the Simonsberg Mountain; and its sheltered position, with cooler than-average conditions for Stellenbosch, are ideal for high-quality wine production.

Vineyard

65% of the grapes come from the Eenzaamheid (Solitude) farm, which is a twenty-two-year-old dry farmed bush vine vineyard, with cooling breezes that help to slow ripening. The remaining 35% come from the Hoogstede (High Place) farm, a cool site planted on decomposed granite soils. The grapes were all hand picked during the early morning in February.

Winery

After destemming and crushing, the grapes were chilled and underwent two days of cold maceration before fermentation commenced. Mixing was done by means of pump-overs three times daily. The wine was separated from the skins immediately after fermentation and pumped directly to barrel for thirteen months’ ageing in French oak barrels, 15% new and the balance second, third and fourth fill.
