Israel

Having been named the ‘vegan capital of the world’, Israel made it straight to the top of our list. With a vegan population of over 5%, and vegetarian and vegan dishes being integral to Israeli cuisine, Israel is a herbivore’s haven. It is thought veganism is historically bound to the Israeli diet due to country’s dependence on eating from the land.

Whilst dining in Israel is infamously expensive, the country does boast a plethora of more affordable vegan street food dishes, as well as creatively-curated fine dining options.

Popular throughout the middle east, Falafel is also widely considered as the national dish of Israel. Eaten with pita, hummus, and Israeli salad, this dish makes a quick and reliable vegan street food staple. For a traditional Israeli offering, be sure to try the classic Sabich. This pita sandwich is typically stuffed with fried aubergine, potatoes, pickles, hummus, Israeli salad and tahini.

India

India is a vegetarian’s paradise. With more vegetarians residing in India than the rest of the world put together, finding flavourful and unique vegetarian food will be the least of your worries. Indian cuisine is typically known to be laden with ghee and other dairy products, but veganism is increasingly making an appearance.

South Indian food is far less reliant on dairy than that of the north, with regional staples such as sambar, Dosas, Idli, vegetable curries and chutneys being naturally vegan.

Ethiopia

Ethiopian food is a personal favourite here at The Artisan Food Company. Rich and flavourful, Ethiopian dishes often resemble stews and are accompanied by injera: a spongy flatbread made from teff flour which is used to scoop up the main dish. Vegan options include Misir Wot – a red lentil stew made with an Ethiopian spice blend.

Stir-fries are a popular side dish, consisting of variations of vegetables – particularly shredded cabbage, potato and carrots. Atikilt wot is especially popular amongst tourists due to its mild flavour.

Mexico

Hearty, flavourful and satisfying, Mexican food is always a winner.

With an emphasis on fresh, exotic vegetables, tomatoes and avocados, Mexican cooking is incredibly easy to adapt to a vegan diet. Beans, corn and rice are staple components and meat fillings can often be replaced with vegan alternatives. Poblano peppers, edible cactus, flor de calabaza and frijoles are all delicious and flavourful animal-friendly options and can be added to your favourite Mexican staples.

Burma

Burmese cuisine is predominately plant-focused yet is extremely overlooked. Reflecting Asian cuisine, vegan-friendly dishes include Shan Tofu Soup, Shan Tofu salad, salads and stir-fried vegetables. The Burmese tea leaf salad is perhaps the most well-loved vegan dish. The base of the salad is made from fermented green tea tossed with cabbage, tomato, nuts, ginger, sesame seeds and mung beans.
