Château Lagrange is a much-beloved third growth in Saint-Julien, lying to the west of the appellation, beyond Château Gruaud-Larose. Since 1983, Japanese ownership has provided the investment and vision to make Lagrange one of the consistently best performing châteaux among the third growths.

Vineyard

The vast vineyard of Lagrange spreads over 115 hectares, and unusually for Saint-Julien, it is planted with both red and white varieties. The estate lies on two hills and has a clay and limestone subsoil with a topsoil of pebbles and gravel. Pruning and thinning of extra grapes keeps production down and ensures only the best grapes are used.

Winery

This second wine includes parcels of younger vines as well as lots that didn’t quite make the grade for the grand vin, but were too good to sell off in bulk. The wine was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with daily pumping over during a 15-21 day maceration. The selection and blending was done before transfer to barrel for twenty months’ ageing in French oak, with twenty percent new wood.
