Mamete Prevostini Botonero Nebbiolo 2017

£15.20

A melange of red cherries, berries and currants, leading into Nebbiolo’s tell-tale floral flavours of violets and roses. There is a real delicacy here, with gentle tannins and a crisp acidity, but certainly no lack of intensity.

Producer

The Prevostini family have been producing wine on the terraced slopes of Valtellina since the mid-1940s. The grandfather, Mamete, made wine from local grapes for his restaurant customers, taking advantage of crotti, the natural caves found throughout the region and which provide ideal cellar conditions. His grandson, also called Mamete, eventually took over the business and spent an eight-year trial period refining the production before releasing the results in 1995. Despite all that work behind the scenes, the wines are wonderfully unforced. They capture the perfumed, silky-textured character of Nebbiolo with great transparency, and are among the most sophisticated wines we have tasted from the region.

Vineyard

The vines are planted on terraces of both sandy and silty soils, which also feature limestone and granite, in the province of Sondrio. The southfacing vineyards are located between 300 and 700 metres above sea level and are planted at a density of 3,600 vines per hectare.

Winery

After being destemmed, the grapes were gently pressed and passed into stainless steel tanks, where they underwent a six-day fermentation period on their skins at a temperature of 25°C. After a second pressing, the wine was returned to stainelss steel tanks, where it underwent malolactic fermentation and a further eight months’ ageing before bottling.
