Producer

Nick Maloney is a California native with Burgundian training. Raised in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, he studied in Beaune and made wine in Pernand-Vergelesses while launching Father John, named in honour of his grandfather, a priest. A trial run of 200 cases of Pinot Noir was produced in the 2012 vintage, with full commercial production (just over 400 cases) beginning in 2013. The style is a sheer delight: a delicate yet uncompromising expression of California’s confident return to finesse in Pinot Noir. We tip Nick for great things.

Vineyard

The grapes come from a site planted at an altitude of 500 metres, 8km from the sea. The vines are twenty years old and a mixture of ninety-five percent of a Burgundy clone and five percent Wadenswill, planted on sandy soils.

Winery

The wine was fermented using wild yeast and underwent eighteen months’ ageing in French oak barrels, thirty-five percent of which were new. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered
